Native American Heritage Month

Native communities have shaped the story of the United States for thousands of years, developing distinct languages, traditions, governments, arts and ways of life. Their
histories also include resilience in the face of forced removal, loss of land, suppression of languages and other policies that disrupted Native communities across generations.

Florida has its own rich Native history. The Seminole and Miccosukee peoples remain an important part of the state’s cultural identity, preserving traditions while continuing to
shape contemporary Florida through art, education, environmental stewardship and community leadership.

This month is an opportunity to learn beyond familiar stories and explore Native history from Native perspectives. Read works by Indigenous authors, discover traditional and contemporary art, learn about tribal nations and explore the histories of Native peoples in Florida and across the country.

Visit the Library to find books, documentaries and digital resources that highlight Native voices, histories and experiences throughout November and all year long.
