World Kindness Day

A small act of kindness can make a bigger difference than we realize. World Kindness Day, observed on Nov. 13, encourages people to look for simple ways to support one another and strengthen their communities.

Kindness does not have to involve a grand gesture. Check on a neighbor. Thank someone who helped you. Recommend a favorite book to a friend. Read with a child. Volunteer your time. Offer encouragement to someone who is having a difficult day. Even giving someone your full attention can be meaningful.

Libraries are built around many of the same ideas. They are places where people share knowledge, learn new skills, discover different perspectives and find connections within their community. A Library card provides access to books, e-books and other resources that can introduce readers to lives and experiences different from their own. The Library’s digital collections also include electronic reference books and other materials that can be accessed with a Library card.

Kindness can also mean helping someone find the support they need. Through its health resources, the Library connects residents with organizations such as 211 Palm Beach & Treasure Coast, which provides crisis intervention and referrals to health, mental health and wellness services throughout the community.
You can spread kindness at the Library, too. Help someone discover a favorite author, attend a program with a friend, introduce a neighbor to a Library resource or simply share something you learned.

This Nov. 13, look for one simple way to make someone’s day a little easier or brighter. Kindness costs very little, but its effects can travel much farther than the moment in which it begins.
