Palm Beach County, FL –The Palm Beach County Library System (PBCLS) is launching "Rediscover Reading" in 2026. This yearlong initiative invites residents to reconnect with the transformative power of books to improve mental health and strengthen community ties. The Board of County Commissioners will present a proclamation at their January 6, 2026 meeting, sponsored by Commissioner Joel G. Flores, to announce that 2026 is the year to “Rediscover Reading.”
Research shows that reading for pleasure among Americans has plummeted from 28 percent in 2003 to just 16 percent in 2023. "This decline is a public wellness concern," says Library Director Doug Crane. "Rediscover Reading is an invitation to trade 15 minutes of scrolling for the narrative delight of a book. Reading is a simple, evidence-based way to improve lives."
A growing body of research confirms that recreational reading offers measurable benefits.
Mental Health: 15–20 minutes of daily reading significantly improves stress regulation and sleep.
Cognitive Longevity: Consistent reading is linked to a 23% lower risk of early cognitive decline.
Social Connection: Shared reading experiences, such as book clubs, activate brain regions tied to empathy, helping to counter the current "loneliness epidemic."
Throughout 2026, all PBCLS branches will offer specialized activities and events designed to make reading more accessible, engaging and social.
Monthly Themes & Challenges: The journey begins in January with "New Year, New Adventures," featuring fresh reading challenges, staff recommendations and vibrant displays.
Expanded Outreach: New activities include author spotlights, pop-up library lounges and seasonal events designed to transform solitary reading into a communal experience.
Support for All Formats: The initiative fully supports e-books, audiobooks, and graphic novels, emphasizing that every format provides the same cognitive and emotional boosts.
Exclusive Tools: Residents can visit any branch to pick up an exclusive reading log (while supplies last) to track their progress and set personal goals for the year.
