Celebrate National Volunteer Week: Recognizing the Power of Giving Back
National Volunteer Week, observed April 19–25, is a time to recognize the people who give their time, skills and compassion to strengthen communities. Volunteers support food banks, libraries, schools, parks, shelters, cultural organizations and countless local initiatives that improve quality of life for everyone.
Across the country, volunteers step in where help is needed most. They tutor students, deliver meals, mentor youth, support seniors, protect the environment and respond during times of crisis. Much of this work happens quietly, but its impact is lasting. Communities with strong volunteer networks are often more connected, more resilient and better able to meet changing needs.
The week also highlights how volunteering benefits both the community and the individual. Giving time can help build new skills, expand social connections and create a sense of purpose. Whether someone volunteers once a year or every week, each contribution plays a meaningful role.
National Volunteer Week serves as a reminder to express gratitude and consider ways to get involved. Opportunities exist for a wide range of interests and schedules, from short-term projects to ongoing commitments, available both in person and online.
Local libraries offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for those interested in books, learning and community engagement. Volunteers may assist with tasks such as shelving materials, organizing collections and supporting library programs and activities.
