What do you need to know about the book?Open or Close
We’ll need specific information to find the material including the author, title, publisher, date of publication, journal or citation for photocopies, and any other important information about the item.
Who can use this service?Open or Close
Anyone with a current Palm Beach County Library card who does not have fines, overdue materials, or other charges can use this free service. The limit is five active requests.
How do I request materials?Open or Close
Fill out the Interibrary Loan Request Form available online and at the Information Desk, or ask a reference librarian at any branch.
Is there a charge?Open or Close
This is a free service. The Library belongs to several resource-sharing networks where we can get most materials at no charge. Some lending libraries may charge for borrowing or copying materials. We will not get the materials unless you have agreed to pay the lending fee. The lending charges can be $10 to $20 per loan.
How long will it take?Open or Close
It can take one to four weeks to get the materials depending on availability of the materials, location of the library, and type of delivery.
How do you find out who has the materials?Open or Close
The Palm Beach County Library System is a member of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) which provides access to millions and millions of item records from libraries around the world.
How long can I keep materials?Open or Close
Loan periods vary from library to library.
What type of materials can I request?Open or Close
You can request books, copies of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, microfilms, archival, fiction, research, and special collection materials. You cannot borrow some non-circulating items, but we’ll tell you where they are located if you want to travel. To request an item you must provide title of the journal, author and title of the book or the article, volume, number, page, and the year, etc.
Can I request genealogy materials?Open or Close
In most cases, you cannot borrow genealogy materials. Sometimes libraries will copy materials if you have a family name or citation for a specific section of a book.
Can I renew my materials?Open or Close
Some lending libraries allow renewals. Ask your librarian several days before the due date so they can send the renewal request. You cannot renew overdue materials. If your renewal request is approved you will get a new due date. Call your branch in a couple of days to receive a new due date. If the renewal is denied you will be notified and the materials will be due.
Why are some requests unfilled?Open or Close
We make every effort to fill your requests. Reasons for unfilled requests are:
- The author, title, or citation is incorrect.
- No library owns the material.
- Book is in heavy demand or on best-seller List.
- Book is non-circulating, and for reference only (part of special collection, rare, too fragile to lend, limited edition, etc.)
- Some libraries do not lend current year materials.
Are there materials I can’t request?Open or Close
Phonograph records, cassettes, CDs, DVDs, videocassettes, directories, and indexes, reference books, and encyclopedias (multi-volume sets), and computer disks cannot be requested.
