Talking Books for Visually Impaired

Talking Books is a free service to any resident of the United States or American citizen abroad who is unable to read or use large print or regular print materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations. This service provides a digital player and digital books to members of all ages who have a reading disability, are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, physically impaired and/or veterans. Mailing of materials and equipment is free.

FAQ Talking Books

  • Any resident of the United States or American citizen living abroad who is unable to read or use regular print materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations may receive service through the Talking Books service. This includes those who are blind or have a visual, physical, perceptual or reading disability that prevents them from reading or handling print materials. Talking Books serves members of all ages and offers resources with specific information for those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, physically disabled, veterans and reading disabled as well as those who are family and friends, parents and guardians, and educators and other professionals.

  • To register, mail a certified application to Talking Books. Call Talking Books at 561-649-5486.

  • In cases of visual impairment, blindness and physical handicap, the following individuals may certify eligibility:

    • Doctors of medicine
    • Doctors of osteopathy
    • Ophthalmologists
    • Optometrists
    • Registered nurses
    • Therapists
    • Professional staff of hospitals, institutions and public or private welfare agencies, such as an educator, social worker, case worker, counselor, rehabilitation teacher, certified reading specialist, school psychologist, superintendent or librarian.

    In cases of reading disability from organic dysfunction, doctors of medicine must certify eligibility. 

  • The Advanced Digital Player Machine features an additional button, the Bookmark button. This button marks passages in books (i.e. recipes, citations, etc.).

  • Yes! It would be our pleasure to send you a Talking Books application to get you started or to visit your facility to hold a membership drive! Simply contact Talking Books staff at 561-649-5486. 

  • There is no time  limit on how long a Talking Books item can be borrowed. However, there is a limit to the number of items that can be borrowed on any account. We kindly request the Talking Books members return books in a timely manner.
