eBooks at Your Fingertips
As part of our Digital Media Collection, the Library offers eBooks in EPUB, PDF, Blio and Kindle formats. Patrons with personal computers and Internet access can download and read over 5,700 eBooks titles on their computers from home, or directly download and almost 5,000 audiobooks to iPhone/iPad, Android devices for reading on the go. They can also be transferred to eReader devices such as the Nook and Kindle. You can choose to use Digital Media Collection eBooks for 7, 14, or 21 days and they automatically expire so there are never any overdue notices or late fees to worry about.
Many of these eBooks now appear in the Library’s web catalog. Look for the eBook icon when searching the catalog and follow the “View Book” link to the title.
These documents explain to how to download eBooks in various formats from the OverDrive service depending on the type of mobile device you have.
- Tablets and Smartphones - for any tablet or smartphone using the iOS, Android, BlackBerry, or Windows Phone operating system.
- Kindle Fire / Fire HD - for the Amazon Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD models only.
- Kindle (black & white screen models) - for Amazon Kindle models that have black & white screens.
- Nook Color/ Tablet / HD - for Barnes & Noble Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook HD, or Nook HD+ models only.
- Nook or other eReaders (black & white screen models) - for Barnes & Noble Nooks or other eReaders (such as Kobo, Sony, Pandigital) that have black & white screens.
Overdrive Digital Media Collection
OverDrive provides access to downloadable eBooks. With a valid Palm Beach County Library Card, you can browse and check out hundreds of great titles, download them to your home computer, and transfer them to a portable device.

Axis 360Axis 360 delivers ebooks in EPUB, PDF and Blio formats to Windows and Macintosh computers, smartphones and tablets running Android or iOS, and to eReaders that are compatible with Adobe Digital Editions such as NOOK, Sony Reader and Kobo. Axis 360 also includes digital audiobooks in Acoustik format that can be listened to using smartphones and tablets running Android or iOS.
What devices are compatible with Axis 360?
Axis360 can be used by many devices including Windows and Macintosh computers, iOs and Android mobile devices, stand alone eReaders that are compatible with Adobe Digital Editions (Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader), and tablet based Kindle devices (Kindle Fire / Fire HD). Please note that not all formats in the Axis 360 collection are compatible with all devices. Please see this chart for format/device compatibility.
Are black & white / eInk model Kindles compatible with Axis 360?
Black & white / eInk model Kindles (Kindle, Kindle 2, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, Kindle Paperwhite) are not compatible with Axis360. Users with these devices can checkout titles from our OverDrive collection.

How do I access the service?
Windows/Mac – in your browser using one of the links on this page or the direct url of http://pbcls.axis360.baker-taylor.com/
Mobile devices – Install axisReader for your device. Tap Find a Library at the bottom of the screen and browse to locate the Palm Beach County Library. Tap the plus sign on the left to save our library to the My Libraries list. Tap our library’s name to view our Axis 360 collection.
Note: although the Blio and Acoustik apps are needed to read/listen to Blio/Acoustik format titles, you cannot access our Axis 360 collection using these apps. Searching, browsing, and checkout will be done using axisReader, Blio and Acoustik titles will then be sent to their respective apps for reading/listening.
How many items can I have checked out at one time?
You can borrow a maximum of 7 items at a time.
How long is the lending period for an eBook?
If you don’t specify a check out period and select the Checkout Now button, you will automatically have it for 21 days. You can adjust the checkout time from 7 to 21 days by selecting the Add To Checkout List button during the checkout process.
What is the difference between EPUB, PDF, and Blio formats?
Blio - The Blio format and app are designed to be accessible to the visually impaired, and, if your device has a voice installed, use text-to-speech to have the book read out loud to you. The Blio format is also a fixed format, meaning the pages of the ebook will be laid out the same as the print book.
EPUB – EPUB format titles allow a book’s text to automatically adjust to different screen and font sizes. The layout of the text / images will not necessicaly match the print book.
PDF – PDF presents the book in its original layout and visual formatting, and will not adjust the text to fit the device you are using.
Can I download Acoustik audiobooks to a computer / Can Acoustik audiobooks be transferred to an mp3 player?
No. Acoustik audiobooks can only be listened to using the Acoustik app for Android or iOS.
hoopla eBooks and Comics
Enjoy access to over 41,786 streaming eBooks and digital comics through our streaming service hoopla. All hoopla eBook/Comic titles are available on demand with no holds and no waiting. Your titles are sent via online streaming, or can be temporarily downloaded to a mobile device for use while not connected to the Internet. hoopla titles can be read in your computer’s browser, or by using dedicated apps for Android and iOS devices. You can borrow up to 12 items from hoopla each month, circulate for 3 weeks, and automatically expire at the end of the circulation period. You can access more than 4,000 public domain titles, featuring political texts and classics in literature, history, and information technology sets ( eBooks by leading technology publishers about popular software suites and programming languages). With the dictionary that is embedded into NetLibrary eBooks, you can get a definition, and visual or verbal pronunciation, simply by double-clicking on a word.
With an individual account, you can check out NetLibrary eBook titles from a library computer or from your own computer with a valid library card. eBooks are checked out for 4 hrs; a book will be returned automatically at the end of the check-out period. If no one is using the title, you can check it out again. There's no limit on how many times you borrow an eBook.

Gale Virtual Reference Library
Access eBook editions of Gale's acclaimed multivolume reference titles. These reference books can be browsed, searched, and read online and include illustrations found in the printed volumes. You can use these reference materials from a library computer or from your own computer with a valid library card. These titles cannot be checked-out. There's no limit on how many times you can view a Gale title online.
