What are the criteria for getting new
materials to the branches? It is NOT by location! First and
foremost, all locations are equal! This means that no
location receives special treatment for any material received into
the Library. We try to handle material by date ordered though we
sometimes receive material that requires special handling.
Books which are ordered from the
Booking Ahead selection lists receive this special handling. When RUSH orders arrive, many of us stop all regular work and work solely on
these books. They are cataloged, inventoried (when the items are bar
coded and added to ATLAS), processed (labels and location stamps
added to each item) and distributed throughout the system, usually
within 24 hours of receipt.
Technical Services staff have
assigned PRIORITY status (one step below RUSH) to
these materials: standing order items, reference books, dated
material (The 1999 guide to...), encyclopedias, directories, and
travel books. Standing order materials do not follow the date
ordered system, but are inventoried (added to ATLAS) almost as soon
as they are received. After that, they are added to the regular
workflow. Other material that we consider PRIORITY include
"hot topics" (books of current interest), computer books
(especially those which include disks and cds), and holiday books.
The videos and compact discs which are ordered from the vendor also
are handled as PRIORITY.
The rest of the thousands of items we
receive are designated REGULAR. They are arranged on shelves
by date ordered and are worked into the regular workflow balancing
older items with newer ones.
This newsletter editor would appreciate your suggestions for
future issues.
