TRICKY YET USEFUL: SEARCHING BY CALL NUMBER IN UNICORN

If you haven’t tried searching by call #, try these.

In “Item Search and Display” screen –

1. You can Search for “General” in “ALL LIBS” and get a list of titles with newest publications first. This kind of search, however, picks up any 3-digit number in the record (number in title, number of pages, 3 digits after the decimal, etc.) See Samples page 1.

a. Search – General – All Libs for 005.5 (no space before decimal) and you get 7 titles for Microsoft Office
b. Search – General – All Libs for 005 .5 (space before decimal) and you do not get anything.

2. Browse for the same call numbers in MAIN (or your own location) and you get the following:

a. Call number – Browse – MAIN for 005.5 (no space before decimal) produces no hits, but call numbers that follow (005.7) See Samples page 1.
b. Call number – Browse – MAIN search for 005 .5 (space before decimal) produces a long list as follows: See Samples page 2.

005 .5 DES – 005 .5 WAN
005 .52 ASS – 005 .52 MAR
005 .57 JOH, etc.,
and then you get down the list for numbers with no space before the decimal
005.1, 005.133, 005.2, 005.26, etc.

3. You can also search for a complete Exact call number, but results are inconsistent, and therefore not recommended:

For an Exact call number search, please note that the Cutter must be in ALL CAPITALS.

However, the searches Exact – Call # -- MAIN for 005 .52 LAN, or 005 .7565 AND -- two titles found with Browse search listed above for each call number, produce one, two, or no titles.

If you’ve found any other hidden nuggets that you would like to share system-wide, please let us know. Or if you have any questions about record searching in Unicorn, please ask!
