*NEW DEWEY*22*NEW DEWEY*22*NEW DEWEY*22*
We have seen many changes in the
past few months with the advent of SIRSI. Let's get ready to do the
DEWa new Dewey that is!
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
system is continuously revised to keep pace with changing times.
From the 1st edition in 1876, DDC is reworked to keep abreast of
current events and interests. Recently, we received the newest
edition, the 22nd, which includes major revisions in many areas.
Changes include 004-006 (Computer
sciences) which has been expanded. Non-Christian religions have been
added and expanded in the 290's.
And, the new DDC has created new
numbers for such subjects as:
Kwanzaa: (from winter holidays,
394.261 to 394.2612)
Mother's Day: (from spring holidays, 394.262 to 394.2628)
Extreme sports: 796.046 (no previous number assigned)
Digital photography: 775 (no previous number assigned)
as well as revising current ones:
Self-defense: to 613.66 (personal
safety)
Massage: to 613.72 (physical fitness)
Travel lodgings: to 910.42 or 917.06 (facilities for travelers,
such as inns, hotels, bed & breakfasts, etc.)
Because of the size of the collection
(vs. the size of Technical Services staff!) we are not able to
recall books to have them reclassed. However, we consider
reclassifying materials on a case by case basis, especially when
there is a need to keep editions together.
This newsletter editor would appreciate your suggestions for
future issues.
