Technews Bulletin
December 2002
ISSUE #15
**TECHNEWS BULLETIN RETURNS**
TechNews Bulletin is back! It
will be published on an irregular basis bringing you tips and quips
to help make your searching experience easier. And, to answer
questions you have concerning classification and subject access,
such as:
"I love the Dragonriders of Pern
series. How can I find other books that take place there?"
"Do you have any books with the main character, Alex Cross in them?"
Yes, we do! And they can be found in
ATLAS using a subject search. In fact, we have entered many
fictional characters (officially, "fictitious" characters) and
imaginary places in the catalog.
You can find both adult (and some
juvenile) fictitious characters by searching for them just as if
they are real people-- last name followed by the first name:
S= Cross, Alex
S= jones, junie
S=kirk, james
We've also added cross
references to help direct your searches. For example, if you type: s=father dowling the result in ATLAS is: Dowling, Father (Fictitious character) --
Fiction. (32)
Not only will you find fictitious
characters, but there are also imaginary places to visit (e.g. Lake
Wobegon and Mitford). You'll also find legendary characters, such as
John Henry King Arthur, or even the Tooth Fairy.
Don't see your favorite character or
place? Send a Technical Services Inquiry Form to Sue Bermann with
your request or e-mail your question to bermanns@pbclibrary.org.
This newsletter editor would appreciate your suggestions for
future issues.
Please send them to Sue Bermann, Technical Services (or e-mail bermanns@pbclibrary.org)
