"When will we receive new videos?"
"When will we receive new CD's?"
"When will we receive new DVDs?"
This year, we’ve started working with a new AV vendor, Library
Media Service (LMS).
As with any new start up, selection procedures, ordering methods
and accounts need to be established and cataloging and processing
parameters must be set up for each format: videos, music CDs, Books
on CD, DVDs and audiobooks. We prepared cataloging and processing
manuals and sent samples for LMS to follow before the first order
was placed. As we’ve worked with LMS during this first year, we’ve
determined that the most efficient way to get videos to you is to
catalog and process them ourselves. We’ve arranged for LMS to
repackage videos for us in the plastic video cases only, the theory
being that by reducing the amount of preparation required by the
vendor the material gets to us faster. They catalog and process our
music CDs, but we must still review the classification numbers and
enter item records into ATLAS before sending them to you.
As for the new formats we hope to receive soon, such as Books on
CD and DVDs, we will continue to work with LMS to insure accuracy in
material processing. We will be cataloging the new formats in-house,
once we receive them, to guarantee their timely delivery to your
locations.
Last month I joined the Collection Development staff on a road
trip to the South Area branches. Our last stop of the day was at WBB
where I had an opportunity to see their new AV shelving. It was very
impressive and very accessible. I was especially pleased to see how
well the CDs displayed, by subject, in call number order. There was
no need to add branch specific notations or any genre designations
on the CDs, as the call numbers spoke for themselves: 781.642–Country
music, 782.42–Children’s songs, etc. The videos were also
arranged by Dewey number with no unique markings or dots to confuse
the patrons. I look forward to visiting other locations to see the
new AV shelving.
This newsletter editor would appreciate your suggestions for
future issues.
