“Forced to flee their countries for reasons beyond their control, refugee children survive amidst poverty and insecurity. They live with their future on hold in refugee camps and collective centers”. – The UN Refugee Agency
The plight of children and adult refugees alike is devastating and heartbreaking. Organizations such as the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and our state’s Refugee Services Program, part of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), do tremendous work to help people affected by war, torture, or human rights violations. In an effort to raise awareness of this horrific situation and to “recognize and celebrate the contributions of refugees throughout the world,” the UNHCR sponsors World Refugee Day each June 20th.
What can we do to help? How can we participate in World Refugee Day?
Attend a local celebration. On Friday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m., the West Boynton Branch is hosting a film screening and discussion of the award-winning movie “God Grew Tired of Us,” a story that follows the “Lost Boys” of Sudan through adversity and triumph in their relocation to the United States. Call 734-5556 for more information about and to preregister for this special event.
Wear light blue, the international color of UN aid workers, on the day of the event and let others know why you are wearing this color.
Read a book. Visit your local branch library to check out one of these books from the list below that tells inspiring and compelling stories about “real people with real needs.”
