White Cane Safety Day |
|
Friday, October 15 is recognized across the country as White Cane Safety Day.
White Cane Safety Day was signed into law 46 years ago by President Lyndon B. Johnson to promote safety and independence among people who are blind or visually-impaired. The day helps generate awareness for drivers of the need to yield to people who are walking with white canes, especially now when electric and hybrid cars are quieter than normal cars and a blind person may not hear them. Crossing the street is perilous, but for a blind person the quieter cars are a major problem.
If you know someone who is visually impaired, please tell them about our Talking Books for the Blind. For more information on this free service, visit www.pbclibrary.org/outreach-talkingbooks.htm or call 561-649-5500.
