It’s
back-to-school season once again. While you’re busy shopping for
#2 pencils, notebooks, and yellow highlighters, remember that
your most important school supply of all just might be your
library card.
Your library offers a variety of resources to help you succeed
in school and many of these resources can be accessed from your
home computer using your library card. Just go to our web site
at www.pbclibrary.org
and take a look.
Using the online catalog, you can search for books, DVDs, and
CDs and even place holds on the items you’d like. The library
will notify you when your items are here waiting for you to come
and check them out.
A variety of useful resources appear if you click on
Research
Resources. If you need to find magazine and newspaper
articles, try using InfoTrac OneFile.
If you’re writing a critical essay, researching a paper, or even
preparing for a debate, Opposing Viewpoints can be
another very useful database to use. Complex current event
issues such as global warming, Iraq, and many others are
presented in a pro-and-con format.
Will you be taking an advanced placement test or the SAT’s this
year? Learning Express offers interactive, online
practice tests for these and many other exams. You can get
immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an analysis
of your results. In addition to the practice tests, there are
online tutorial courses to help you improve your reading,
writing, and other academic skills.
The library also offers reference service through e-mail
Email Reference Request Form The
reference staff will provide brief answers to factual questions
or suggest locations or other sources which might help answer
your question. Messages sent to the e-mail reference service are
read Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). We will contact
you about your question on our next working day.
And for students in Grades 4-12, don’t forget Live Homework
Help Online, an easy way to get help in math, science,
English, or social studies by working with a live qualified
tutor. This service is also available in Spanish. Click the link
on the home page of our web site to get started.
Of course, you are always welcome to visit the
library in
person. In just a few minutes, a reference librarian can help
you find the information you need or offer some tips and tricks
to using the various databases, saving you valuable time.
Whether you visit us in person or through our web site, your
library is here to help make this your best year ever! |
