Marjory Stoneman Douglas:
Champion of the Everglades
Celebrate National Library Week with a living history
performance by notable Chautauqua speaker Joan Wolfberg,
presented by the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System
and the Florida Humanities Council, and the Florida Department
of State, Division of Cultural Affairs:
In a live, one-woman show, Ms. Wolfberg, a professional
actress, portrays the latter years of the extraordinary life of
Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Long before environmental activism was
considered fashionable, Marjory Stoneman Douglas worked
diligently to protect the Everglades, one of Florida’s most
precious resources. Her book, Everglades: River of Grass,
continues to be a landmark text on the importance of preserving
wildlife and the natural environment. In this performance Ms. Wolberg brings to life the determination and vision of a woman
who never ceased in her efforts to fight on behalf of her
beloved land.
Ms. Wolfberg, a resident of Hobe Sound, is well known for her
portrayal of other famous figures, including Golda Meir and
Eleanor Roosevelt.
