Meet the Author: Michael Sheetz

Wellington Branch
Saturday, May 16, 2009
2:00 p.m.

Michael W. Sheetz, criminologist and author of "Kill for Thrill: The Crime Spree that Rocked Western Pennsylvania," will appear at the Wellington Branch on Saturday, May 16 at 2 pm. The book is a true crime, historical account of a seven-day killing spree over the 1979 Christmas holiday in rural Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The so-called "kill for thrill" serial murders involved four victims who were randomly selected for senseless and brutal killings, the worst kind of nightmare to afflict a small community. It also covers the convictions, the death sentences, and the court appeals that are still pending 30 years later. Incorporating details of the murderers' lives as well as the legal maneuvering within the court system, Mr. Sheetz relays this awful story with the drama of a novelist and the insight of a law professor. Preregister for this event.

During the winter of 1979, southwestern Pennsylvania was rocked by a series of sensational murders, sparking a thirty-year criminal justice saga. A week of brutal, seemingly random killings culminated in the provocation and fatal shooting of Patrolman Leonard Miller, an officer new to the town of Apollo's police force and only twenty-one years old. Little more than a year later, two men were convicted of the rash of homicides and sentenced to death--yet both are alive today.
