Library Provides Election Resources, Services
By Bob Davidsson,
Government Research Service

One Voice Becomes ManyIf the poll worker assisting you at the your voting precinct looks familiar, chances are it is the same person that serves you from the circulation desk or reference department of your local Palm Beach County Library System branch location.

Library System staff, along with County Government employees from other departments, will be working as PBC Supervisor of Elections (SOE) volunteers at the elections headquarters, and in precincts across the county, during the 2008 General Elections in November. Library staff has volunteered for this important civic duty since before the 2000 elections.

It is not just Library personnel that are utilized on Election Day, many library buildings serve as voting precincts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, four PBCLS branch libraries – Jupiter, West Boynton, Hagen Ranch Road and Southwest County - were designated by the Supervisor of Elections as Early Voting Sites for the 2008 Primary and General elections.

For the past three months, the Supervisor of Elections held “Voter Information Workshops” in Library System meeting rooms to demonstrate the new voting system for voters and volunteers. The workshops also gave citizens the opportunity for voter registration, to request absentee ballots, and complete poll worker applications.

County libraries also serve as useful depositories of information for current and past elections. The Library System’s Government Research Service (GRS) section created and maintains an electronic “Election Resources” website indexing local, State of Florida and federal “E-government” election sources found on the Internet.

The digital “Election Resources” site, accessible 24/7 from home or office computers, features links to local SOE election files, the Florida Division of Elections and Florida Elections Commission, as well as the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the Electoral College Home Page. Address: http://www.pbclibrary.org/grs-elections.htm .

The PBC Library System will continue to serve in the future as an active partner with Supervisor of Elections Office in providing an array if services and information resources for both registered voters and new participants in our electoral process.
