Verizon Wireless Clothesline Project:
A Traveling Art Exhibit Promoting Domestic Violence Awareness

HopelineHopeline Phone“It’s not just a family problem behind closed doors, but a problem that affects the whole community,” said Mary Cauthen, Director of Domestic Abuse Programs of the YWCA of Palm Beach County, during a press conference at the Wellington Branch. Cauthen, along with Tanya Vu Shepherd, Supervising Attorney for the Family Violence Unit of the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office, and Corporal Paul Rubino of the Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office, were on hand to kick-off the unveiling of the Verizon Wireless Clothesline Project art exhibit, it’s only appearance in the South Florida area. The exhibit was designed to bring awareness to the community about the emotional and physical devastation of domestic violence.

This powerful and emotional display “features artistically expressive T-shirts that hang on a makeshift clothesline.” Each T-shirt tells the story of a domestic violence survivor, conveying the fear and pain suffered by the victim, as well as her struggle to become empowered and healed.

In addition to hosting the Clothesline Project, the branch will collect used and broken cell phones which will be refurbished and distributed to victims of domestic violence in the local community through the Verizon Wireless’ Hopeline® program. A special drop-box will be available next to the exhibit in which the community can place their unwanted phones.

The Verizon Wireless Clothesline Project is sponsored by Verizon Wireless, the YWCA, and the Palm Beach County Library System. It will be on display at the Wellington Branch from November 13 to 30 during regular library hours.
