Imagine a community where family reading
practices are so thoroughly immersed in the culture that
families read to their children just as they feed and clothe
them.
Now imagine all families in Palm Beach County with preschoolers,
kindergarten and 1st grade students reading the same book.
A Splendid Friend, Indeed! by Suzanne Bloom, is the title selected for our
4th Annual Families Reading Together Campaign. Suzanne Bloom
will present her program, “It Ended with a Story” at
local
branch libraries (see the
calendar listings). Using her books,
drawings and sketches she will explain how she creates her books
from start to finish.
Our Families Reading Together Campaign serves to remind our
communities about the importance of encouraging children to
read, as well as to inspire a love of reading, one book, one
family, one community at a time.
Join us at the Palm Beach Zoo on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9:00
a.m.-5:00 p.m. to kick-off
Children’s Book Week. All children
presenting a valid Palm Beach County library card will receive
free admission to the zoo for themselves and one adult.
On Sunday, November 11, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., the Norton Museum
of Art will celebrate Families Reading Together. Children will
participate in a “scavenger hunt” and an art project. Admission
for children under 13 is free. Call (561) 832-5196, ext. 1133
for more information.
Children's books and the love of reading are celebrated all week
long with storytelling, a children’s bookmark contest, and other
book-related events. Check the calendar section for Children’s
Book Week programs.
