For the first time, the Palm Beach County Library
System will show Brazilian films. The Film Festival entitled
Fome de filme: a retrospective of Brazilian cinema
is a collaboration between the
Library System and the Caribbean and Latin American Studies
Program, The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters,
Florida Atlantic University and is sponsored by
Friends of the
Palm Beach Library.
Five English subtitled films will be shown
throughout the county various
libraries
and Florida Atlantic University professor and film critic,
Hernando Olivares, will be present at two sites to discuss and
critique the films. All of the films have been awarded
international recognition and this will be a unique opportunity
for the public to watch these foreign language films.
At the County’s Main Library on April 19 at 2:00
pm this outstanding event will be launched with a program.
According to the 2006 US Census Estimates, there are 10,864
Brazilian in the county. In order to serve the Portuguese
language population, the Library System will also be presenting
its first collection of Portuguese language books. The books,
partially donated by the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami
and others acquired by the library system, will be housed at
Main Library and at
Southwest County Regional
Library in Boca Raton. This outstanding collection of books with
authors like Jorge Amado, Machado de Assis, Joấo Guimarấes Rosa,
Graciliano Ramos, Lima Barreto, Jose Saramago and others will
offer the Brazilian and Portuguese communities a wonderful
opportunity to read the classics in their native language.
Children’s books in Portuguese language will also be on display
at the event.
