Celebrate Black History Month with African-American Authors

Black History Month is celebrated every year during the month of February. Why not take some time and read some popular African American fiction and non-fiction authors?

Books by major black writers rarely made top lists like The New York Times until about a decade ago when African American writers like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Terry McMillan, and others began enjoying acclaim and big sales in the mainstream market. But, there are some other authors that you should know.

If you like to read classic books, look for books by James Baldwin Go Tell It on the Mountain, Ralph Ellison Invisible Man, Zora Neale Hurston Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Richard Wright Native Son.

If you like historical fiction, look for books by Barbara Hambly Dead Water and Margaret Blair Young One More River to Cross.

If you like romance books, look for books by Donna Hill Destiny's Daughters, Brenda Jackson Perfect Timing, Connie Briscoe P.G. County and Kimberla Lawson Roby Changing Faces.

You can find more suggestions at the African-American Literature Book Club which provides author profiles, book recommendations, online discussion boards, and critical reviews of books by and about African-American writers. Also, the African American Resources provides information on African-American culture, education, history and literature. Both sites are available through the Reader’s Advisory page http://www.pbclibrary.org/readers.htm.
