GOALS!
Are they important in your life? When one has a goal, the road
becomes simpler. Sure, there’ll be stumbling blocks on the path,
but they won’t stop you for long because you realize that they
are merely obstacles which will eventually be kicked out of the
way.
I would like to introduce myself. I am a tutor for the Library
System’s Adult Literacy Project. When I retired, I chose Delray
Beach as my retirement destination. The one constant throughout
my career was that I would be involved with a literacy program
immediately upon my retirement because of my love of reading.
Within three months of my move to
Florida in 2002, I took the Tutor Training Workshop and
immediately started tutoring. My first and second students each
stayed in the program for only a year due to personal problems.
However, in 2003, I met Rosalia Bledsoe and a terrific team was
born. I have committed to stay with Rosalia for as long as it
takes to achieve her goal of obtaining a GED.
Rosalia started her life in Potosi,
Mexico, and was part of a family consisting of 12 children. Life
was very hard and if it wasn’t for the assistance of a wealthy
woman, she would not have been able to complete high school in
Mexico. After moving to the United States, she met her husband
in Chicago. They later moved to Florida and have two sons and a
daughter. It is important to Rosalia to improve her
conversational English and writing skills. While she has
completed the Library’s Voyager Program, she continues her
studies.
At the present time, we work on grammar and spelling. In
addition, Rosa participates in the ELLIS Computer Software
Program at the Library Annex, which assists English language
learners in pronunciation, grammar, and spelling. As a result of
our joint efforts, we were named the Outstanding Tutor/Student
Team of 2006.
To continue this very rewarding work, we need more volunteer
tutors at the libraries. There are so many students waiting and
not enough tutors. Please call me at (561) 649-5495 to learn
more about creating possibilities for people who really need
them. |
