Main Library Computer Center

Library Computer Center Open for BusinessThe Library Computer Center is part of the Main Library. The Computer Center was created by the Library with a supporting grant for computers and software from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and you can sign up for a sixty-minute session. In addition to regularly scheduled open work time, a wide range of classes are available for computer training. Seating for these classes is limited and reservations are required. For more information, please call the Main Library at 233-2600 and ask for Telephone Reference.  For more information on our training programs, view the descriptions below.

The Library Computer Center is home to ten personal computers with Internet access and various Microsoft Office products: each PC is loaded with Office 2000 software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher in addition to several Encarta reference products.

Each PC also has several children's software programs installed, such as, The Magic School Bus, Barney, Arthur, and Dr. Seuss interactive reading and game programs.

Main Library Hands-on Class Descriptions

Basic Windows
Learn the basics of moving around in the Windows environment and get some hands-on practice using the mouse. (60 min.)

Basic Word Processing
Microsoft Word is a word processing program that can be used to create school reports or resumes.  Learn how to align text, change fonts, and copy and move text. (60 min.)
Some computer experience is necessary.

Browser Basics
This is a hands-on instructional class for learning the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.  Learn tips for using search tools on the Internet. Participants should have some experience using the mouse. (60 min.)
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet  

E-mail Basics
Learn how to use Yahoo!, a free web-based e-mail program.  Participants get hands-on training for sending and receiving mail as well as creating folders and an address book.  (60 min.)
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet and Mouse Experience

Look it Up!
Learn how to access your library account from home, renew your materials, locate items, place books on hold, and find book reviews. Using the library databases learn how to access newspapers, magazines, books, readers advisories and more. (60 min.)
Prerequisite: Beginning Internet

PowerPoint Basics
Learn to compose slides and to add eye-catching effects to your presentations. (60 min.)

E-Government Help
This class demonstrates the resources needed to locate the vast wealth of government information on the Internet.  Learn to use specialized databases and search tools to find information. (90 min.)

Business Searching
This class demonstrates resources to locate business information on the Internet.  Learn to use specialized databases and search tools to find information. (60 min.)

Mousing Around (Mouse Practice)
Get Mousercised!  Practice using a mouse in a self-paced classroom setting.  For Beginners.  An assistant is available to help answer questions. (60 min.)

Access Basics
Learn how to use Microsoft Access to create a database for compiling and sorting data. (60 min.)

Health on the Internet
Presented by the Community Health Information Service, this workshop will demonstrate the difference between good and not so good sources of health information. Participants will get hands-on experience searching for information about medications, health conditions, medical terms and doctors' credentials. (90 min.)

Excel Basics
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that can be used to input and sort data. Learn how to create a basic spreadsheet and make simple charts and graphs. (60 min.)
Some computer experience is necessary.

Natural Medicine: Finding Trusted Resources
Mindy Rose will teach you how to assess health claims and become an educated health consumer by learning to ask the right questions. Learn about websites and books that you can trust for natural medicine. A Community Health Information Service program. (90 minutes.)

Résumé Basics
Learn tips for creating a better résumé with this class.  Participants should have word processing experience. (60 min.)
Some computer experience is necessary.
