Love of Children’s Literature Month

WHEREAS, children young and old are drawn to stories and books to help them explore the world around them, to learn right and wrong, and to discover the bonds of friendship and family, and;

WHEREAS, children’s literature has a deep tradition in western culture, with authors such as Lewis Carrol sharing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or L. Frank Baum’s tales of Dorothy’s magical journey in The Wizard of Oz, and;

WHEREAS, children’s literature gives young people the opportunity to explore mysteries, whether by following Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys on a case, or solving a cheesy adventure with the famous mouse reporter Geronimo Stilton, and;

WHEREAS, children’s literature can take us on emotional journeys, such as dealing with painful loss in Katherine Paterson’s Bridge to Terabithia, or exploring the hard life of an black orphan boy living through the Depression as told by Christopher Paul Curtis in Bud, Not Buddy, and;

WHEREAS, children’s literature brings readers to imaginary worlds, whether it is following Bilbo Baggins across Middle Earth to a dragon’s lair in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, or telling the adventures of a young boy wizard attending the wondrous school of Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, and;

WHEREAS, during the Palm Beach County Library System’s Summer Reading Program, children and teens are sharing their love for reading at 17 locations and the bookmobile with a variety of activities and events, along with copies to borrow of all the children’s books mentioned above and more;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, this 9th day of July, 2019: Love of Children’s Literature Month

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this proclamation is duly sealed and executed by the members of this Board. The foregoing Proclamation was sponsored by Commissioner Gregg Weiss, and upon unanimous consent of the Board, declared the Proclamation duly enacted.
