Library Literacy Friends, Inc. is comprised of volunteers, students, and other concerned citizens committed to the continuation of the Palm Beach County Library's Adult Literacy Project and to the elimination of illiteracy in our County. We organized in 1993 to protect and continue the Adult Literacy Project when the program was in jeopardy. The Library offers a unique, instructional, one-to-one adult reading program focusing on individualized student goals.

Our purpose is:

  • Create public interest in the cause of adult literacy.
  • Increase awareness of the Adult Literacy Project.
  • Provide a voice for non-readers.
  • Support and fund educational and social activities for students and tutors.
  • Assist in the promotion and development of adult literacy facilities and programs.
  • Encourage gifts of funds, time, and talents from individuals and organizations.

The Adult Literacy Project features:

EACH ONE, TEACH ONE: Library Literacy Friends recruit volunteer reading tutors through speeches, community fairs, and word of mouth. The Library uses the phonics-based Laubach Way to Reading Series as the core instructional material. Our learners often tell us that they have tried other methods with little success. Individualized instruction allows tutors to offer lessons meeting the real-life needs of our students.

TUTORS: Another key to the program’s success is the relationship that develops between the student and tutor. Anyone can learn to be a reading tutor by taking our free, ten-hour tutor training workshop. Library staff and Friends’ trainers conduct these sessions. For more information about the training schedule please call the Literacy Office at (561) 649-5500 or 1-888-780-5151.

STUDENTS: Students blossom as they gain confidence and self-esteem from learning to read. Referrals are countywide from the state and local literacy coalitions, school system, and individuals who hear about the program through word of mouth. Students coming into the program read below a 5th grade level; must be over 18 years of age; speak English; and have the desire to improve their reading skills.

Become involved and volunteer! Consider our tutor training workshop; refer an adult non-reader to us; promote our program in your community; and invite us to speak to your organization!
