Job Information

The Palm Beach County Library System has identified local, state, and federal Internet resources of special interest to job hunters and career changers.  In addition to these websites, the Main Library has a large selection of books on job hunting, job changing, resume writing, career development strategies and company information available in the Business Reference Center and throughout the circulating collection.  A printed guide to this collection, entitled Job Resources @ your library, is available at the Main Library reference desk.

Internet Career Development Resources

 

The Riley Guide is one of the best internet career guidance sites. The Riley Guide is a directory of employment and career information sources and services on the Internet. It is primarily intended to provide instruction for job seekers on how to use the Internet to their best advantage. The Riley Guide leads job hunters through the many online sites and services that may be useful during a job search. The site does not post jobs or resumes.

 

The Wall Street Journal's CareerJournal.com website is considered one of the best Internet websites for executive and professional career development and job-hunting.  It includes articles and career development resources as well as a searchable database of position listings.

 

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is the Federal Government's source of career information, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations.  The Internet version allows you to search various combinations of job and career information.  The print version is available at all the library's locations.

Federal and other State Job Services

Federal Government Job Announcements are listed at USAJobs the Federal Government's Employment Information website.  The site features job vacancy information and services for both job seekers and employers. This site is the United States Government's official source of job and employment information.

America's Job Bank is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor and the state employment services.  The database offers over one million job listings.  Other services include automated job search features and resume posting.

State Employment Service Sites provide career and labor market information for each state. These links also provide additional resources available in each state and may assist users in making career choices. Note that some of these sites require a user id and password. Labor Market Information includes occupation and employment wages, and other information affecting the world of work.

Job Services for People with Disabilities

Palm Beach Habilitation Center is a private not-for-profit organization located in Lake Worth which provides therapeutic training programs, community job placement, employment, residential, recreational and senior activity programs for individuals with mental, emotional and physical disabilities.  Their programs include career development, job placement services and job coaching services.

 

The Able Trust is the Florida Governor's Alliance for the employment of citizens with disabilities.  The Ability Forum Job Bank link includes a Job Center as well as other Internet resources chosen to help people with disabilities overcome barriers through the power of technology.

 

The Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration's disAbility Online website includes a range of information on federal regulations, technical assistance and programs that support the needs of people with disabilities in the workplace.

 

JobAccess.org provides a dedicated system for finding employment for people with disabilities nationwide.

 
 

Local Agencies and Programs

 

Workforce Alliance is a private, non-profit organization charged with crafting and overseeing a workforce development strategy that is responsive to the needs and concerns of both Palm Beach County employers and job seekers.

 

Palm Beach Community College Crossroads/Connections Program provides career development assistance for women in transition.  Services range from crisis counseling, financial counseling, and child-care to job and career development programs. 

 

County and Municipal Job Links

 

Palm Beach County Government and Agency jobs are listed on the county and the individual agency websites. 

 

City government job listings may be found at each city's website.

 

State of Florida Employment Resources  

 

Unemployment Claims Registration and Filing for the State of Florida must be done electronically through the state's website.  If you do not have a computer at home you may go to a Palm Beach County Workforce Alliance Center location or your local library branch.

Private Sector Job Listings

A list of the best national job searching websites may be found on the Workforce Florida website.  Workforce Florida Inc. is a public-private partnership created to support and promote economic growth through workforce development.

 

The Salary Calculator includes data from 800 U.S. and 200 foreign cities. It compares the cost of living between where you live and where you're moving.

 

Local Newspapers provide electronic job listings and career advice.

 

The Palm Beach Post classified listings on the GoPBI website include local job advertising and links to local career development resources.

 

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel careers section of the website includes regional job listings from the newspaper's classified advertising, job hunting resources and links to national career development information.

 

The Stuart News covers northern Palm Beach County and Martin County using the TCPalm website.  Please click on employment to find job listings in the region.

 

National Newspapers

 

Other Palm Beach County newspapers, and newspapers from around the United States are listed on the library's website.  These may include job listings and career information appropriate to their regions.  They may be a good source of leads if you are planning to relocate.

Alfred allows you to retrieve vintage versions of data that were available on specific dates in history.
  Bigcharts
Bigcharts.com is a website from MarketWatch which provides current and historical stock quotes, industry and market index information. This website can be searched by symbol or keyword and provides interactive charting features.
Business and Company Resource Center - Infotrac
Contains company profiles, company brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and articles on business-related subjects. Full access to Investext Investment reports available when used within the library. Access to select investment reports available from home. A valid library card number is needed to access this database from home.
  Business Owners Toolbox
Thousands of pages of information and tools to help you start, run and grow a successful small business; including downloadable checklists, model business plans, forms and other documents.
Consumer Price Index
The site for the latest CPI and news releases (used to calculate rates of inflation).
  Federal Reserve Economic Data
"FRED" database--research interest rates, PPI, CPI, employment and population data.
Federal Income Tax Forms
Download the current Federal tax forms directly from the IRS.

Florida Division of Corporations
The Division of Corporations is the State's central location for the filing of business entities, Uniform Commercial Code financing statements, trade and service marks, and fictitious name registrations.

The guide for entrepreneurs and emerging companies.
Hoover's Online
Lists information on thousands of companies.
  Morningstar Mutual Funds
Search for information on thousands of funds and stocks. Morningstar can be accessed on a library computer or from your home computer by typing in your library card number.
Mutual Fund Investor's Center
This website provides links to a large collection of mutual fund companies, fund listings and planning, tracking and monitoring tools designed to help investors use mutual funds to reach their goals. This is the website of the Mutual Fund Education Alliance, the not-for-profit trade association of the no-load mutual fund industry.
  Northern Light
Northern Light Search provides access to business and industry news from business news sites, leading business publications, industry authority blogs, regional newspapers, and national news sources. You can search, browse and analyze content, personalize the site, set search defaults, and create and subscribe to alerts. Also, you can analyze your search results with the MI Analyst™ (Market Intelligence) feature.

  Palm Beach County Occupational Licenses
Anyone providing merchandise or services to the public in Palm Beach County must obtain a county occupational license.  Various cities may require additional occupational licenses.
Palm Beach County Office of Small Business Assistance
Offers specific business help for ethnic minorities, women, and the disabled. Also offers help to anyone interested in business.

Pinksheets LCC provides pricing and financial information for the over-the-counter (OTC) markets.

Provides free small business counseling using retired business executives, with offices in West Palm Beach and Delray Beach.

A free service, but users must register and login for access to info on 155,000 US and Canadian companies.
  U.S. Bankruptcy Court Southern District of Florida
Contains information on filing for bankruptcy in South Florida and allows users to view court cases, dates and other information.
Valueline
Helping investors to get the most accurate and independently created research information available about stocks and other investments, Valueline is now available online through the library. (You must be on a library computer to use it.)
  Workforce Florida
A web site built to provide people seeking jobs in Florida with the most up-to-date information available on job openings, training and education programs and labor market statistics.  To locate a One-Stop Center, use the Employ Florida web portal.

  American Institute of Philanthropy
The American Institute of Philanthropy uses letter grades to rate about 400 charities on this website. They also publish a quarterly charity rating guide available by mail.

Bankrate.com provides up to date information on the rates offered by thousands of banks, thrifts, and credit unions to help you find mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, home equity loans and other banking products.
  The Bauer Group
The Bauer Group rates banks and credit unions.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
Searches for chambers of commerce; links to web sites.

Consumer credit reporting agencies where you can order reports on your credit history.
annualcreditreport.com is the ONLY authorized online source for you to get a free credit report under federal law. You can get a free report from each of the three national credit reporting companies every 12 months.
Florida Division of Consumer Services
Links to insurance and legal resources in Florida.  The State of Florida's Division of Insurance Consumer Services provides education, information, and assistance to consumers. Services include community outreach programs and a toll-free consumer help line. Use the Liability section to search for closed claims against doctors, dentists, HMOs, hospitals, lawyers and abortion clinics.

Search GuideStar's database of more than 850,000 U.S. nonprofit organizations.
Give.org - BBB Wise Giving Alliance
The Alliance reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations that are the subject of donor inquiries.
  IIHS/HLDI: Crash Testing & Highway Safety
A non-profit site that test vehicles for crash ratings and overall safety.  It's goal is to reduce vehicle crashes and the injuries that occur as a result.

  RN Database
A registered identification number or RN is a number issued by the Federal Trade Commission to a business residing in the U.S. that is engaged in the manufacture, importing, distribution, or sale of textile, wool, or fur products.
