Families Reading Together Proclamation
WHEREAS, reading is a fundamental life skill that starts at an early age in the home and provides opportunities for exploration, imagination, and enjoyment by opening minds to a world of unlimited possibilities, and;
WHEREAS, Families Reading Together is a great way to encourage and prepare children to read on their own, providing educational, social and linguistic benefits that last a lifetime, and;
WHEREAS, children aged 3-5 who had been read to at least three times per week are more likely to recognize all letters, have greater word recognition and are more likely to understand words in context, and;
WHEREAS, The Norton Museum of Art plays a vital role in promoting literacy and education for the entire family, and;
WHEREAS, for the past sixteen years every November, the Palm Beach County Library System celebrates Families Reading Together, this year with an engaging event at the Norton Museum of Art and a series of special activities at libraries across the county, and;
WHEREAS, What a Treasure! by Jane and Will Hillenbrand is the picture book chosen for all preschool through first grade children to read with their families, and;
WHEREAS, the kickoff event would not be possible without the support of and collaboration with the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, Norton Museum of Art, School District of Palm Beach County, Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County, Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, Tire Kingdom Service Centers, Riviera Beach Public Library, Lake Park Public Library, Palm Springs Public Library, Delray Beach Public Library, and the North Palm Beach Library.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, assembled in regular session this 22nd day of October 2019, that November in Palm Beach County is hereby declared:
Families Reading Together Month
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this proclamation is duly sealed and executed by the members of this Board. The foregoing Proclamation was sponsored by Commissioner Robert Weinroth, and upon unanimous consent of the Board, declared the Proclamation duly enacted.
