“American Street,” by Ibi Zoboi + We the People (2011), by Danh Vo

Sat, Mar 16, 2:00 pm

In this debut novel, Zoboi draws on her experience as a Haitian immigrant, infusing her lyrical exploration of America with magical realism and voodoo culture. Vietnamese-born Danish artist Danh Vo also addresses immigrant culture through his sculpture, a fragment of an exact copy of the Statue of Liberty. Discuss the distinct ways Zoboi and Vo approach the subject of immigration.

“The Art of Death: Writing the Final Story,” by Edwidge Danticat + Mingqi funerary objects

Sat, Apr 27, 2:00 pm

Danticat’s book is at once a personal account of her mother dying from cancer, and a deeply considered reckoning with the ways that other writers have approached death in their work. Look across time and civilizations, view the Mingqi, or “spirit objects,” of early Chinese burials and compare concepts of death across cultures.

““Women Without Men: A Novel of Modern Iran,” by Shahrnush Parsipur + “Women Without Men (2009),” by Shirin Neshat

Sat, May 18, 2:00 pm

After the publication of “Women Without Men” in her native Iran, Parsipur was arrested and jailed for her frank, defiant portrayal of women’s sexuality. Now banned in Iran, the novel traces the interwoven destinies of five women. Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, whose photographic work is in the Museum Collection, directed a stunning film adaptation of the book. Read the book in advance, see the film and then discuss both.
