About the
Library

to donate time or money to help make the Library System even
better? Would you like to make the library your career? You can
find the answers to all these queries in the “About the Library”
section of our web site:

The Palm Beach County Library System is composed
of 14 branches and a bookmobile. To locate the service location
nearest to you, check our map or click on the list of libraries
in our system to learn more about our hours and services. We are
also pleased to host the Lawrence E. Will Museum in our Belle
Glade Branch. This museum records the history of the Belle Glade
region.

A wide range of departments support the public
service component of the Library System, either behind the
scenes or reaching out to the community. They include financial
and facilities, collection development, technical services, and
much more!

Do you want to work for the library? New job
openings for staff positions are posted every week when they
become available. If you are looking for employment, please take
a look at our jobs page every week:

Volunteer service plays an increasingly active
role in the Library System. We accept volunteers of all ages and
abilities to assist with a variety of tasks. If you are
interested in becoming a volunteer, please pick up an
application at any one of our library locations.

The Library Advisory Board represents the
Library to the Board of County Commissioners and works with the
Library Director to improve and expand library service
throughout the County. It’s role is to provide policy, budget
and other recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners.

The Friends of the Library is an organization
that brings people interested in books and libraries together.
They focus public attention on library services, facilities and
needs; and stimulate gifts of books, magazines, desirable
collections, endowments, and bequests. We invite you to become a
Friend for as little as $10 per year.

Library Literacy Friends, Inc. is comprised of
volunteers, students, and other concerned citizens committed to
the continuation of the Palm Beach County Library's Adult
Literacy Project and to the elimination of illiteracy in our
county. This organization works actively in the community to
help raise awareness of the Adult Literacy Project and promote
it to those in need and those who wish to donate time or money

Auto Repair
Reference Center
If you prefer to spend your money on gasoline for the car rather
than paying for needed car repairs, consider fixing it yourself.
The library's web site can help. With your laptop in tow, you
can head into your own garage and scroll through a complete
online repair manual at the Electronic Databases page. Select
the Auto Repair Reference Center, and type in your library card
barcode number to gain access to this great resource.
http://www.pbclibrary.org/edb/patronlinks.asp
This comprehensive resource offers:
-online versions of the Chilton Total Care
manuals for servicing most domestic and imported vehicles, with
some as old as 1954
- technical service bulletins and recalls dating back to 1987 in
PDF format
- wiring diagrams in PDF format
- estimated costs and labor times for various repairs
Auto Repair Reference Center's user-friendly
instructions emphasize safe and effective methods and are
suitable for weekend enthusiasts, amateur mechanics, and
students in the trade. Learn simple tasks like checking fluid
levels and changing oil filters, as well as higher skills such
as replacing a bad muffler, checking compression, installing a
trailer hitch, and re-lining brakes.
Often you just don't know what's wrong, so the
instructions give tips for diagnosing the problem and
determining how to proceed. Plenty of photographs and diagrams
guide you along, and the tools and parts needed for each repair
are listed. You will even find how to repair body damage and
restore interiors in this handy, money-saving electronic
database.
Take car repairs into your own hands by visiting
the Auto Repair Reference Center in our Electronic Databases.

Holiday
Closing
All Palm Beach County Library System locations
will be closed on Monday, October 13, in observance of Columbus
Day. No materials will be due on that day. All library locations
will reopen on Tuesday, October 14.
5/ A Quick
Byte
Have you ever pressed the wrong key on your PC
and instantly wished you could take it back? In most cases you
can with the “Undo” command. As soon as you make the error,
press the Ctrl and Z keys together to undo the last thing done.
Oftentimes, you can repeat the Ctrl-Z combination to step back
and undo the last several commands in a row. Add Ctrl-Z to your
toolbox and watch the mistakes disappear before your eyes.
6/ Next Month in Books & Bytes
Next month, we will look at the wide range of
computer training classes available in the Library System on our
“Computer Training” page, and provide information on our new
“Learning Express” database.
Books & Bytes is published on the third Monday of each month.
