1/ Introduction to Books & Bytes
Welcome to the January issue of Books & Bytes. This month we
will introduce a great new service available through our web
site – eBooks. This will be followed by an exploration of the
“Directories” category in Useful Web Links. We will also examine
the “Florida” section in our Reader's Advisory.
We hope you enjoy receiving Books & Bytes. Please let us know
what you think of our publication by writing to:

2/ Introducing eBooks @ your library
The Palm Beach County Library System introduces another new way
of accessing information by offering a collection of eBooks:
full-text electronic versions of published books that library
patrons may search, borrow, read, and return over the Internet.
The collection consists of over 21,000 titles across all subject
areas, with the strongest coverage in business, history,
health/medicine, sociology, literature, and religion.

To access eBooks, you must first visit a County library and use
an Internet computer to set up a free eBook account. Our staff
will be happy to assist you with this process.
After setting up an account at the library, you may check out
eBook titles from Internet computers in the Main Library, in all
branches, or from your home or work via the Internet. eBooks are
checked out for a two hour period; a book will be returned
automatically at the end of the check-out period. You will be
able to check the title out again if no one else is using it.
There is no limit to the number of times you may borrow an eBook.
The Library has access to this shared collection of eBooks from
NetLibrary, a leading provider of these materials. In addition
to the NetLibrary collection of copyrighted eBooks, patrons have
access to more than 4,000 public domain eBooks, featuring
political texts and classics in literature and history. As an
added feature, Houghton Mifflin’s 4th Edition of The American
Heritage Dictionary of the English Language is embedded into
NetLibrary eBooks and has been enhanced technologically to
include graphics and audio pronunciation. Users are able to
access a definition, and visual or verbal pronunciation, simply
by highlighting a word.
The Palm Beach County Library System is joining approximately 50
other public libraries around the state in providing patrons
with eBooks through a contract the State Library of Florida has
negotiated with SOLINET. This new collection is called the
SOLINET Shared Collection.
We hope you enjoy reading eBooks. Please take a look at this
service by visiting:
