1/ Introduction to Books & Bytes
Welcome to the October issue of Books & Bytes. This month we
will provide a guide to using our "Search this Web Site" tool.
We will also notify you about a few holiday closings and explore
another area of our Useful Web Links.
We hope you enjoy receiving Books & Bytes. Please let us know
what you think of our publication by writing to:

2/ Search this Web Site
Do you need to find information on our web site fast, but
don’t know where to start? Well, look no further than our handy
"Search this
Web Site" tool.
Made possible through Atomz, "Search this Web Site" is a page
containing a simple search box. It is designed to locate
information located on the library web site. To use it, enter
your keywords into the white text box and then click the search
button. You will soon be taken to a page with a list of results.
Click on a link in the list of results to travel directly there.
It is very quick and easy.
Below are a few pointers direct from Atomz that will assist
you in creating better searches:
* Be aware that this search form does not search our catalog.
If you wish to locate a book or video, please use the catalog
search form located at the top of every library web page.
* Do not use these words: the, a, an, library, catalog, palm,
beach, or county. These words will only produce hundreds of
results.
* Make sure your search terms are spelled correctly.
* Use quotation marks to find words which must appear
adjacent to each other, for example, "useful
web links." Otherwise, the search results will
include the word "useful",
"web", and the
word "links", but
not necessarily in that order. The words may appear anywhere,
and in any order, within the document.
* Capitalize proper nouns, and remember that lowercase words
will match any case. For example, typing
search will return all documents containing
the words search, Search,
and SEARCH. Typing
Search, however, will
instruct the search engine to look only for the capitalized
word.
* Wild card searches can expand the number of matches for a
particular request. The * character is used as the wild card
character. For instance, searching for
wh* will find the words
what,
why,
when,
whether, and any other
word that starts with
wh .
Searching for *her* will
find the words here ,
whether,
together,
gathering, and any other
word that contains
her
anywhere in the word.
* Please remember that this form only searches the library
web site. If you wish to search the World Wide Web, please
sample one of the
search
tools listed in our
Useful Web
Links.
So when you need assistance locating a page on our web site,
pay a visit to our "Search
this Web Site" page.

4/ Useful Web Links Highlight
As a regular feature each month, we will examine one section
of our Useful Web Links. Our web directory is compiled by
librarians who apply their knowledge and experience of the
Internet to locate the best web sites for each topic.
Florida is one of the most dynamic places to live in the
United States. At the library we answer questions regularly
about the state government and the Florida law. People are also
looking for assistance with business, health, and job seeking.
To help answer these questions, we have created a web page
designed to answer your Florida needs. So whether you are a new
resident or a lifelong Floridian, the "Florida"
section of
Useful Web Links will be of use to you.
Our "Florida" section is divided into seven sections:
General Information: Look through this area to discover basic
facts about the state (Florida Facts), learn about the
population (Florida Census Data), locate good schools (Floridasmart.com),
and search a directory of state government services (MyFlorida).
Jobs: "Florida Job Resources" provides multiple and easy
access points to a wide variety of Florida jobs, plus it
contains up-to-date classified ads from major Florida
newspapers.
Government: Explore this section to locate a government
telephone number (State of Florida Telephone Directory) or find
a listing of important government agencies (Florida Government
Services DIRECT).
Business: "The Florida Division of Corporations" allows
visitors to search for active corporations doing business in the
State.
Law: In this section a visitor can track down a city
ordinance (Florida Code of Ordinances), search the State
statutes (Florida Statutes), and look through the online law
library (Florida Law Links).
Health: This area provides information on important health
issues including elder care (Florida Guide to Nursing Homes),
medical licensing (Florida Physician and Health Professional
Licenses), and notes on specific doctors (Florida Physician
Profiles).
Genealogy: Look in this section for information on your
Florida ancestors at the "Florida GenWeb Project."
So the next time you are looking for information on the great
state of Florida, please explore our "Florida"
Useful Web Links.
Looking for a good book to read? In our next issue we will
examine "Reader’s Advisory," which
contains a listings of great web sites to help you answer that
eternal question "What do I read next?"
Please note that the next issue of Books & Bytes will be
published on November 26.
