1/ Introduction to Books & Bytes

Welcome to the July issue of Books & Bytes. In this issue we will provide an overview of Email Reference Services and provide information on our newest computer training program, Basic Computers.

We hope you enjoy receiving Books & Bytes. Please let us know what you think of our publication by writing to: webmaster@pbclibrary.org

2/ E-mail Reference Services

Need to ask a question, but don’t have time to visit the library? Do you need to locate an elusive fact? Would you like a little assistance starting your research? If so, you can get answers by e-mail from your library by using the E-mail Reference Service. To ask a question, please fill out the question form on our web site at: http://www.pbclibrary.org/email_form.htm

The Reference staff can provide brief answers to factual questions or suggest locations or other sources which might help to answer your questions. Please keep in mind that we are not able to perform lengthy research through this service.

To ask your questions, simply visit our web site and click on the "E-mail Reference" link in the left-side column. You will soon be taken to a web page containing an easy to fill out form. Please supply your name, e-mail address, telephone number and the location where you live. Below these fields is a large white box in which you may type your question. After you have composed your question, click on the gray "Send Request" button to deliver it to our librarians.

Messages sent to the E-mail Reference service are read Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). We will contact you about your question on our next working weekday. E-mail reference is a quick and easy way to find answers and solve problems. We hope you will give it a try the next time you need information.  http://www.pbclibrary.org/email_form.htm

Confused by your hardware or software? Mystified by your PC? Now you can learn the basics about computers at our new presentation called, appropriately enough, Basic Computers.

4/ Useful Web Links Highlight

It is amazing how much information is available on the World Wide Web. It seems nowadays that the answer to any question can be found online. The greatest challenge is to locate the right web site.

As a regular feature, each month we will take a moment to examine one section of our Useful Web Links. Our web directory is compiled by librarians who apply their knowledge and experience in order to locate the best web sites for each topic.

This month, we will give you a sampling from our "Quick Information" section.
http://www.pbclibrary.org/links-quickinfo.htm

"Quick Information" is designed to locate answers to short, factual questions. For example, when tracking down a quote, try our link to the online version of "Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations." Need an encyclopedia? Why not follow our link to the "Encyclopedia Britannica." Do you know what time it is? "Quick Information" will provide the time anywhere in the world (Time Zone Converter), sunset and sunrise times (from the U.S. Naval Observatory), and the cultural importance of any given day (in the "Time Zone"). This section also provides "Census Statistics," "Currency Conversion" ratios, and a "Biographical Dictionary." Finally, we have a link that answers that perpetual question, "Is that person dead yet?" through the "Dead People’s Server."

So the next time you require a quick fact or answer, take a peek through the resources available in our "Quick Information" section.
