Quick Byte: An app is an app is an app. Or is it?

AppsHow can you be sure that the app that you’re downloading to your mobile device is safe and virus-free? Since just about anyone can create an app for Android devices, it’s critical that we know what apps we’re using.

Think before you download and consider these tips. First, read all of the information that is available about the app and its developer. Find out what else he or she has developed, and read the reviews. Visit the developer website. How many times has the app been downloaded by other users? If the number is high (in the thousands), chances are that if there was a security problem, someone would have written about it online.

Also, consider the permissions that you’d be granting to the app developer by downloading the app. For example, I recently decided to download a book-related app to my cellphone. The app that I chose had no reviews and no number of previous downloads but it looked very enticing. When I viewed the permissions, they read like a list of don’ts: permission to share contact data, modify contact data, save contact data, and track the frequency with which I’ve communicated with specific individuals. The long list was ended with the caveat that malicious apps may share contact data without my knowledge. Um, no thanks.

Finally, if you want to be sure that you’re mobile device is as secure as possible, download a security app. You’ll find many reputable ones, with familiar names like Norton, AVG, avast!, and Lookout, among others. The bottom line is that apps enable us to do lots of fun and time-saving things on our mobile devices. Just be sure to do the research and approach with caution!
