World Refugee Day

"Our responses to refugees must be grounded in our shared values of responsibility sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights and in international refugee law, including the principle of non-refoulement." - UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon

According to the United Nations, around 14 million people in the world are refugees. A refugee is a person who has been "forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence ... and has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group."

United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) sponsors World Refugee Day each year on June 20, to raise awareness of refugee struggles and to honor the contributions of refugees throughout the world. http://www.un.org/en/events/refugeeday/

Our state’s Refugee Services Program, part of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), also does tremendous work to help people affected by war, torture or human rights violations.

How can you participate in World Refugee Day?

  • Attend the events being offered throughout our library system.
  • Visit the UNHCR website and the Florida DCF Refugee Services website to donate and learn more about this local and global crisis.
  • Read a book or watch a film to better understand the experience of a refugee. Visit your local branch library to borrow our books with inspiring and compelling stories about "real people with real needs."
  • Wear light blue, the international color of UN aid workers, on the day of the event and let others know why you are wearing this color.

The Palm Beach County Library System is also proud to take part in the World Refugee Day Celebration and Citizenship Ceremony, presented by the Palm Beach Refugee Task Force and the Dr. Kathryn W. Davis Global Education Center, Palm Beach State College.

Quickbyte: DART

With the start of hurricane season, it's important to be prepared. The Damage Assessment Resource Tool (DART) app, developed by the Palm Beach County Public Safety Department, allows the community to prepare for emergencies and report problems afterwards. While our focus in South Florida is on hurricanes, the app is useful no matter what type of emergency arises.

Available for free for Android and iOS devices, the app allows users to find out about activities at the County Emergency Operation Center (EOC), to locate and get directions to emergency shelters, to see where county evacuation zones are located, and to see whether people located in the zones have orders to evacuate. Need to find an open gas station, grocery store, or place to find ice? DART has those clearly marked to save you the hassle of driving around and wasting precious gas.

The app was developed and introduced in 2012, but has had multiple updates and features added to it, so if you haven't downloaded it to your mobile device or checked it out lately, take a look. Hurricane season is upon us, and as we all know, it's better to be safe than sorry.

DART is available on the county website, the Google Play store and on iTunes.
