Celebrate Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month! We will be offering programs that honor the heritage, contributions and achievements of our African American community. Enjoy musical performances, book discussions, films and more.

In an engaging musical presentation, Dr. Naima Johnston Bush shares life lessons and great historical moments experienced by Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday and Ethel Waters (Okeechobee and Glades Road Branch).

Vocalist Perley Rousseau and pianist Sonny Daye present a concert filled with warmth and humor highlighting the life and music of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald (Royal Palm Beach, West Boynton and Jupiter Branch).

View the award-winning documentary, “America’s Blues” and enjoy a live instrumental performance (Acreage Branch and Main Library).

Join Outreach Librarian Ronald Glass for a Book Discussion series, (Belle Glade, Greenacres and Gardens Branch).

At the Lantana Road Branch, Dr. Anthony Dixon, assistant professor and archivist at Bethune Cookman University, shares his triumphant story from being incarcerated in his youth, to earning a Ph.D. in History from Indiana University.

In a special offering in all our branches, families will enjoy, Orisirisi African Folklore - Moonlight Stories. With African drumming, dance, and fun-filled audience participation, Moonlight Stories will appeal to the child’s heart in everyone.

Black History Month has its national roots in a week-long observation initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, it was expanded into Black History Month by President Ford in 1976, and became Public Law 99-244 in 1986.
