10 Ways to Enjoy the Holiday Season

We all know how busy the holidays get with shopping, decorating, baking and seasonal parties. Sometimes we are rushing around and forget to enjoy the season. The Library offers many programs and events to help you enjoy the holiday season. 1. Relax - Attend one of our adult coloring classes and explore this latest relaxation technique or attend a meditation lecture to learn other ways to de-stress. 2. Let It Snow - You too can enjoy winter without the actual cold temperatures at one of our many programs that celebrate all things snow. 3. Check Out a Movie - While away an afternoon watching a movie while everyone else is at the mall. Then check out a DVD to watch with your family. 4. Play a Game - Whether you like old-school board games, video games, card games, chess or trivia you can find something to have some fun. 5. Get Holiday Inspiration - Learn new techniques to make your holidays more festive with classes on how to make cards, scrapbook pages, decorate your nails, wrap gifts and more. 6. Encounter Celestial Wonders - The Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches offers telescope viewing at many of our locations. 7. Read and Discuss Your Favorite Book - If you like the classics, contemporary fiction translated to the screen, or cookbooks there are a variety of book discussions for you to enjoy - and some for your teens as well. 8. Use the Force - Get caught up in the excitement for the new “Star Wars” movie at one of our many programs. 9. Entertain the Kids - Bring your kids in to enjoy story time, games, crafts, movies, LEGO® bricks, “Star Wars” and more. For babies to teens and everyone in between. 10. Learn Something New - Attend a class or book a one-on-one session with a librarian to learn new computer skills, the ins and outs of your eReader or tablet, and how to use our online resources.

Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature

Fans of Frankenstein, science enthusiasts, and the curious are invited to explore the mysterious and intriguing world of Mary Shelley’s novel, “Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus,” with a special exhibition. The Library System is hosting the travelling exhibit, “Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature.” This exhibit explores how Shelley’s novel provides a framework for discussions of medical advances that challenge our traditional understanding of what it means to be human, as well as the transformation of the “monster” in popular culture. To coincide with the exhibit, the Acreage Branch Library is offering events for adults and children which feature Frankenstein’s monster and investigate the novel’s themes. This exhibition runs through Jan 03, 2016. It was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, and curated by Susan Lederer, PhD. Support for Book Life events is provided by the Friends of the Library. Images courtesy The Bodelian Library, University of Oxford; Universal Studios Licensing LLC; Courtesy The Carl H. The World Almanac for Kids Online Now Includes Healthy Eating Info

We are delighted to announce that a brand-new module on Healthy Eating has just been added to The World Almanac® for Kids Online. The brand-new Healthy Eating module will teach kids about all aspects of healthy eating and nutrition. Articles and videos combine to cover timely and important topics such as basic nutrition, weight management, nutrition for sports and exercise, eating disorders, and food safety and disease prevention. How many calories do we need? What happens when we exercise? What's behind abnormal eating? Which "superfoods" have disease-fighting properties? Concise bullet points break down important topics into easily digestible, bite-sized bits (pun intended), and the videos provide clear, easy-to-understand overviews - a great way to introduce the lesson! The program is available on the Library website at our Online Research page.
