Friends Annual Meeting

Mon, Nov 17, 2:00 pm
Hagen Ranch Road Branch
14350 Hagen Ranch Road Delray Beach 33446

Join us for a short business meeting and election of officers, followed by:

Guest Speaker: Chad Crawford

Chad is the creator and host of "how to Do florida," a show that invites tourists and locals alike to experience the real Florida. An educated and cultured country boy at heart, Chad, a third generation Floridan, is simply proud of where he lives and enjoys sharing it with others. After serving in the Navy, Chad enrolled into Full Sail University, a highly accredited film school in Orlando, where he studied photography and video production. He often says, "'how to Do florida' is a collision of my two passions, film-making and Florida." He will share the basic knowledge on how all Floridians, those who were born here and those who weren't, can get out there and enjoy their state. (2 hr.)

For special seating: bring your Friends Membership Card or join the Friends prior to the annual meeting. Refreshments will be served.

11th Annual "Families Reading
Together Campaign"

November 2014 marks the Palm Beach County Library System's 11th Annual Families Reading Together Campaign. This event serves to remind the community of the importance of sharing books with children and encouraging them to read on their own. This project is made possible by community sponsors and all events are free to the public.

During this year's Families Reading Together celebration, all preschoolers and children attending kindergarten through first grade will be encouraged to read "Reading Makes You Feel Good," by Todd Parr. Elementary school and public libraries will conduct special programs for the event. Additional outreach programming for day care centers will be provided by the Palm Beach County Library System.

Kicking off the festivities on Nov 01, the Palm Beach County Library System has planned a day of exciting activities at the Palm Beach Zoo. Children showing their library card will receive free admission for themselves and one adult and the children will receive a free book from the Great Book Giveaway. Families Reading Together programs during November include performances by Celtic harpist and storyteller Patrick Ball, performances by Ballet Palm Beach, a teen photography exhibit, and a bookmark design contest.

This campaign is sponsored by the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System.

Researching Your Family Tree
at the Library

Was your great-grandmother a suffragist? Did your great-great-grandfather fight in the Civil War? Researching your family tree can take you on a lifetime journey of discovery, but where do you start? The library has many electronic resources that can help you begin your research. One of our most popular resources is Ancestry Library Edition. Ancestry provides access to millions of records from a variety of sources including birth certificates, census records, military histories, passenger lists, photos and more. This amazing resource can be accessed from any of the Library's 17 branches.

Another popular resource, Heritage Quest, is rich in American genealogy and history with access to thousands of online family and local history books. You can also access original images from historical records; from the United States census to Revolutionary War pension files, Heritage Quest can help you discover where your American story begins.

Have you ever wondered about the community where your ancestor lived? Digital Sanborn Maps can help anyone wanting to learn the history, growth and development of over 150 Florida cities and towns. These historical maps provide detailed information about a structure including the outline of each building, the size, shape and types of construction materials used. You can access both Heritage Quest and Digital Sanborn Maps from the comfort of your home. All you need is a library card and a computer. Check out these resources and more from the Library's Genealogy Research Page.

Quick Byte: ViaProtect

If you're concerned about mobile security take a look at ViaProtect, a free app for Apple and Android devices. Because we live in an age where we are constantly threatened by financial leaks, hacking and identity theft, we should be taking all available steps to protect our personal information. That's where the viaProtect app factors in: it monitors your device for any vulnerabilities and lets you know if it finds any threats.

It collects data from your phone or tablet and analyzes it to see if you're at risk. You may have accidentally downloaded an app from an unsafe source, and ViaProtect will expose that information so that you can take action to protect yourself. For example, some unsafe apps will allow someone to take control of your phone, expose personal information, or monitor your usage. You could be totally unaware of the activity unless you have a way of tracking it.

Once ViaProtect analyzes phone activity, it offers access to a report that shows you where your vulnerabilities are. Users will get a status report, determine risk, find out how information is being transmitted, and even find out who is accessing your data by location. You can even log in from your computer and access the ViaProtect data.

While there is no magic formula to staying safe in cyberspace, ViaProtect is worth a look. Even if you don't choose to download the app, be aware of your online activity and take precautions to stay as safe as possible!

Available for free at iTunes and the Google Play Store.
