50th Anniversary Proclamation
WHEREAS, in 1963 and 1965 The League of Women Voters appeared before the Board of County Commissioners to request library service for the citizens of the unincorporated areas of the county and in February 1967, the Board of County Commissioners appointed the first Palm Beach County Library Advisory Board, and;
WHEREAS, in April 1967 The Florida Legislature passed a Special Act establishing the Library Taxing District of Palm Beach County and in September 1969 under the direction of Library Director, Florence Biller, the first Palm Beach County Public Library location opened in Tequesta, and the first bookmobile entered service, and;
WHEREAS, with two voter approved expansion programs into a system with 16 branches, a Main Library, an Annex and a Bookmobile all of which provides library services to unincorporated areas, 24 municipalities and through a reciprocal borrowing agreements with nine municipal libraries, and;
WHEREAS, for the past 50 years the Library has added services and activities for all ages including literacy tutoring, job seeker and small business resources, children’s and teen activities, computer training, Internet access, government and genealogy research, consumer health information, and other means of community support and enrichment, and;
WHEREAS, the Palm Beach County Library System has a vision to open minds to a world of unlimited possibilities and a mission to connect communities, inspire thought and enrich lives while serving as an educational pillar of the community, and;
WHEREAS, the library continues to explore new ways to serve the residents of Palm Beach County as our population grows and technology changes, while still retaining a personal connection with our residents when they walk in our doors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, assembled in regular session this 20th day of August 2019, that September 2019, in Palm Beach County, is hereby proclaimed the
The 50th Anniversary of the Palm Beach County Library System
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this proclamation is duly sealed and executed by the members of this Board. The foregoing Proclamation was sponsored by Commissioner Mary Lou Berger, and upon unanimous consent of the Board, declared the Proclamation duly enacted.
